We started this week with Thursday night football, having the Dallas Cowboys leave the south and visit the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. Starting strong in the first quarter, both teams put up a touchdown, with Javonte Williams scoring on the Cowboys and Jalen Hurts on the Eagles. Both teams fought neck and neck, with the Cowboys putting up 20 points, but the Eagles proved why they are the reigning champs by putting up 24 points and earning their spot as number 2 in the NFC East.
Following the Cowboys at the Eagles, the Kansas City Chiefs visited the Los Angeles Chargers, and unfortunately for the Swifties, the Chiefs lost 21-27, which puts them at the bottom of the AFC West. The highlights of the game were that on the Chargers, Cameron Dicker didnt miss a single one of his field goals or extra points. And for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes didnt throw any interceptions
For the start of week one’s Sunday games, the Miami Dolphins went north to Indiana to go against the Indianapolis Colts. The dolphins had a rough game, only scoring one touchdown in the last 6 minutes of the game, and the Colts scored a total of 33 points. Following that tragic game, the Pittsburgh Steelers played the New York Jets and barely won 34-32. Thankfully, Chris Boswell snuck in with a 60-yard field goal, securing their win with a minute left in the game.
Nothing really special happened the rest of the day besides our Carolina Panthers unfountuly losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars 10-26. The Panthers were not having a good day in Florida, allowing a sack and 2 interceptions, not to mention they lost a fumble too.
The first Monday Night Football game of the season was between the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings. Even with a homefield advantage, especially with a good turnout, the Bears just barely lost, being shy of a field goal to tie up the game. The score ended up being 27-24, Vikings. With the Vikings having a good first game, we decided to interview a Minnesota fan to see what he had to say about the game. “I had hopes they’d win this week, and thankfully they pulled through and got that week one win.” (Hunter Zackman, 10).
Even though football is mainly centered around rivalries and competition, many people have traditions that transcend these aspects and strengthen bonds, bringing people together. Hunter tells us that he and his dad have always had a tradition to toss around a football and then sit down to watch the game with some 5-layer dip. “I root for the Minnesota Vikings because my dad grew up in Minnesota for a while, and I think they are cool.” (Hunter Zackman,10). Listening to Hunter say this really resonated and solidified the fact that football brings people together, and whether it’s a Sunday, Monday, or Thursday, football is so much more than grown men throwing around a football.
